First Year Corps Member, City Year Detroit
An education-focused nonprofit, City Year puts recent graduates in failing public schools across the country in order to address the dropout crisis. Through focused interventions in attendance, behavior, and coursework in ELA and Math, corps members hope to keep students in school and on track to graduate. City Year also provides whole school support in running an after-school tutoring space as well as running special events and initiatives throughout the year. In this position, corps members routinely work 50+ hour weeks in both the school and around the community. We prepare lesson plans daily and maintain a steady presence in the classroom despite what may be happening in the school (for instance, my individual classroom had more than five different teachers in the first few months of the school year). As a community engagement coordinator, I designed Snapchat geofilters for the school, neighborhood, and events put on by City Year.
Constituent Relations/Legislative Intern, Office of MP Mark Adler
As part of the University of Michigan-Dearborn Ottawa Parliamentary Internship Program, which is a highly competitive program that has placed students as unpaid interns in the offices of Canadian Senators and members of Parliament since 1983, I lived in Ottawa, Canada, for a period of five weeks while working in the office of Member of Parliament Mark Adler. During this time, I performed data entry, helped put together Mr. Adler’s schedule, and was responsible for mass mailings sent to constituents in Mr. Adler’s riding. I also answered phone calls as well as fixed office equipment when needed.
Constituent Relations/Legislative Intern, Office of State Rep. Dan Lauwers
During the internship, my main responsibilities were composing replies to constituent emails, answering phone calls, and searching through local newspapers for accomplishments performed by constituents in order to send them congratulatory letters. My summer project was compiling the information on the 700+ businesses and their owners who were members of the local chambers of commerce in Mr. Lauwers’ district. I also aided Mr. Lauwers’ staff in performing daily office work. While in Mr. Lauwers’ district, I campaigned for the representative by knocking on doors as well as investigated constituent complaints.
